I know it's a cop out, but I really *am* busy...

jacquelynn:

Guys, I’m envious of all the people who are having Tumblr meetups in their cities. Could someone please get a Cleveland one together? Maybe here? Or somewhere else really cool that I don’t know about yet? I’d organize it, but I’m super swamped. I’d still really like to go though.

I’d go for sure ….

In December of 1944, whilst behind enemy lines during the Rhineland Campaign, Private Kurt Vonnegut was captured by Wehrmacht troops and subsequently became a prisoner of war. A month later, Vonnegut and his fellow POWs reached a Dresden work camp where they were imprisoned in an underground slaughterhouse known by German soldiers as Schlachthof Fünf (Slaughterhouse Five). The next month - February - the subterranean nature of the prison saved their lives during the highly controversial and devastating bombing of Dresden, the aftermath of which Vonnegut and the remaining survivors helped to clear up. This is a letter he wrote to his family that May from a repatriation camp, in which he informs them of his capture and survival. Transcript here.

Thanks for posting this ..anything from Kurt Vonnegut is appreciated. Slaughterhouse 5 was a book that changed the way I look at life when I read it back in the 70’s

newsweek palin cover was shot for runner's world

abbyjean:

On the cover of this week’s issue of Newsweek is a photo that was shot for the August 2009 issue of Runner’s World, in which Sarah Palin was featured on the monthly “I’m a Runner” back page. Runner’s World did not provide Newsweek with the image. Instead, it was provided to Newsweek by the photographer’s stock agency, without Runner’s World’s knowledge or permission.

via TNC, who comments “One more thing—I think if you’re really concerned about equality, be that gender, ethnic, religious whatever, you have to come terms with the fact that this means equality even for individuals you don’t much like. It means equality for people who you feel consciously exploit inequality for their own individual gain.
You don’t get to infer that Juan Williams is a porch monkey because you disagree with him. You don’t get to objectify Sarah Palin because you think she’s an awful person. Not if you expect people to take your concerns seriously. I said this already, but it bears repeating—a principle applied only to people you like, mocks that principal. We don’t raise these questions about gender for Sarah Palin’s benefit—we do it for our own.”

I would say that while I find Ms Palin inept and laughable that Newsweek was idiotic choosing this for their cover …but you have to keep in mind that Newsweek is trying to make money and playing to it’s audience, i.e., the American public. As we know all too well the general American public is lazy intellectually and childish in many ways ..so this is what you get. It will generate “buzz” and criticism but I would also wager it sells a hell of a lot of magazines …

I started listening to Christmas music just to annoy a co-worker.
